Safety Relief Valves: Pressure release and vacuum relief valves.

How do I know which valve to use?

What are the uses of valves?

What is the most commonly used valve type?

Quarter-turn 2-way ball valves are by far the most common type of process control valve. They are 2-way (inlet and outlet), 2-position (open and closed) valves that are used for shut-off or isolation of a system, or a loop or component within a system.

 

Why is gate valve used?

A gate valve is generally used to completely shut off fluid flow or, in the fully open position, provide full flow in a pipeline.

What is the difference between PSV and PRV?

While the term PRV is sometimes used interchangeably with PSV, there is a difference between the two. A PRV opens gradually in relation to the pressure, while a PSV is opened suddenly once the pressure hits a certain level in order to avoid over-pressurization and a potential process safety incident.

How do I choose a valve size?

When sizing a control valve, the rule of thumb is to size it so that it operates somewhere between 20-80% open at maximum required flow rate and whenever possible, not much less than 20% open at the minimum required flow rate.

What does API 600 mean?

API Standard 600, from the American Petroleum Institute, describes the criteria for valve design/construction and the material/trim designations for steel gate valves. The most recent version of this standard was published in January 2015, effective as of July 15, 2015.

What is API 6D valves?

API 6D covers the design, manufacture, testing, and documentation for pipeline ball, check, gate, and plug valves for pressure ratings up to ASME class 2500.
